ーTo the Light Beyondー MIU

Artglorieux GALLERY OF TOKYO

Art

My artistic world is deeply connected with my inner experiences and mysterious encounters that accompany the twilight of my life. This may not be unrelated to the fact that I was born into a family that practiced faith centered on mountain worship. Now, standing on the threshold of my seventies, the theme I wish to explore is the concept of “boundary.” It is not merely the line between life and death, but also the transitions between day and night, the changing of seasons, and the turning points in human life—universal moments where limitation and creation coexist.
Since childhood, painting has been my natural means of expressing myself. After graduating from art university, I ventured into the world of business by running an art gallery. Though I was distanced from painting for many years, those experiences nurtured in me a perspective on for “How art functions within society.”
Picking up the brush again after such a long detour is not a return to the past but a new beginning reached through a long and winding journey. It represents my true self, and an affirmation of being alive.
At the heart of my work lies “the light that appears at the boundary.” What unfolds on the canvas is the meeting point between the real and the unreal, between what exists and what fades away fleeting shimmer that drifts between them. It evokes the Western philosophical notion of temporality, while resonating with the Eastern ideas of #i mu (emptiness) and th Fr basho (place). I seek to capture that ambiguous moment as an image that is both abstract and sensorial.
Through my paintings, I hope to convey something that cannot be fully explained by words but can only be felt as it is.
Above all, my works are never self-contained; they are completed only through the relationship with the viewer. The moment a painting meets another’s gaze, a resonance and a dialogue emerge. Even differences in interpretation serve to extend the life of the work.

If, at any point in time—past, present, or future—my work can exist as a meaningful light * hikari, it would be my greatest joy.
